Lisle Park District Accepting Letters of Interest for Open Commissioner Position
Lisle, IL – At the park district’s regular meeting of Park Board Commissioners on April 18, 2013, President Cook announced the Park Board will be accepting letters of interest to fill Commissioner Tony Carballo’s seat, which will be vacated in early May. Commissioner Carballo will be taking his Oath of Office as Village of Lisle Trustee early next month which made the April 18th meeting his last as park commissioner, leaving two years on his four-year term.
Also leaving the park board after eight years of service is Commissioner Janis Kanzler. During that time, the board “accomplished a great many things,” said President Don Cook. During the meeting, Cook read an exhaustive list of accomplishments the park district has made since 2005 and credited Carballo and Kanzler with a strong attention to detail and a great sense of what the park district needed to do to improve its levels of service and accountability to the community. At the meeting, Commissioner Kanzler recognized staff for their openness and honesty and commitment to transparency. “I don’t think I did all that much,” she said. “The staff and board have worked so well together, it has made my job much easier.”
“In all the years we’ve been together, all the decisions this board has made,” Commissioner Carballo stated, “we usually all voted together. Despite our differences of opinions and diversity of views, we all worked so well together for the betterment of the park district and community. This experience will be one I will remember and appreciate for years to come.”

Community Park Fitness Member Charles Fultz Celebrates 90th Birthday
Lisle, IL - Longtime Lisle resident, Charles Fultz is celebrating his ninetieth birthday this month and his twentieth anniversary as a member of Community Park Fitness (CPF) next year. A dedicated CPF member, Charles can be seen on the treadmill, lifting weights, or on resistance machines at least three times a week. What’s his secret to being a spry nonagenarian?
“Number one is heredity and number two is exercise. I have a clipboard with my workout schedule that I refer to each day. My doctor came to the fitness center and developed a routine for me and John [Mizoguchi, CPF Personal Trainer] has added a couple exercises over the past year.”
It’s his fellow fitness center members that keep Charles motivated. “I can’t miss the Saturday morning ‘conference,’” he joked. “You can miss all of the week, but you have to be here on Saturday morning.” The conference is a post-workout meeting between CPF members that involves a weekly wrap-up and discussing current affairs. It’s the motivation from the friends he’s made at Community Park Fitness and staff that keep him renewing his membership for the past twenty years.
“He’s our hero, we want to be like him when we’re that age,” said Bill Mercer, Fitness Center attendant.
A World War II veteran, Charles rode in the first B-29 that flew overseas in the first mission after the Doolittle Raid. He grew up on a Kansas farm, then moved west and worked in a shipyard for a year. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on December 3, 1942. After the war, he attended college on the GI Bill, then went to work at Swift & Company in downtown Chicago, retiring in 1987. His advice to readers: “Eat healthy when you’re working, those coffee breaks will get you. I lost a lot of weight after I retired. Get up and move around!”
A widower, Charles has two sons, three daughters and thirteen grandchildren, and the majority have birthday’s in December, like himself. His mother lived to be nearly ninety-nine years old and his brother is eighty-seven. “Heredity has a lot to do with your health – I gave up butter, mayonnaise and all that good stuff, but my cholesterol stayed the same. There’s a lot of healthy choices you can make; my wife always cooked healthy meals. If it wasn’t in the house, we didn’t eat it!”
In addition to working out regularly, Charles keeps an active lifestyle by driving friends to doctors’ appointments, playing golf, delivering Meal on Wheels, and participating in church activities where he’s a trustee at Faith Methodist Church. If you see Charles at Community Park Fitness, please join us in wishing him a very happy birthday!

Donations Sought in Gentle Learning Preschool Hurricane Sandy Relief Project
Lisle, IL - Seeing the devastation along the East Coast caused by Hurricane Sandy, it made teachers and staff at Gentle Learning Preschool, a facility of the Lisle Park District, ask, “What can we do as a community to help preschools like ours?” After some discussion, the staff decided to sponsor a fundraiser among the entire Park District Community. With the funds raised, a preschool in need would have their wish list fulfilled and the items would be sent directly to the school. With a plan in place, Marilyn Ostergaard, Coordinator at Gentle Learning Preschool, sought out a preschool similar to in size and enrollment that was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and in need of rebuilding assistance. After searching and much consideration, she found one: The Wonder Years Preschool in Staten Island, New York. After many calls and email correspondence with Director Vicki Feinmel, it was clear The Wonder Years Preschool was the perfect recipient for the relief fundraiser. The following email details the devastation and rebuilding efforts at The Wonder Years Preschool:
“I want to thank you for reaching out to the students and me at The Wonder Years Preschool. Many of the people that you’ve seen on TV are families of our students who have lost their homes and all their belongings as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Two of our students were evacuated by boat during the night of the storm and are living in shelters. Our small Staten Island community has been pulling together to try to help these families get back to some sort of normalcy, which is why it was so important for me to reopen the school. The children needed to come back to the familiarity and comfort of seeing their friends and teachers.
“At The Wonder Years Preschool we have two buildings: one building is for the 2-3 year olds and this building was spared. However, at the Pre-K building next door we lost everything: books, toys, rugs, shelves, etc. There are approximately 140 children enrolled in this school. I started The Wonder Years 23 years ago and hundreds of children have passed through our doors, many of whom are family and friends of former students. Although our street was devastated, I’m happy to say that we rebuilt and reopened on November 26. Slowly but surely, we hope to replenish all of the furniture and learning materials that we lost due to the hurricane.
“Perhaps when people see the pictures they could identify with our school and what has happened.
“Thank you for your support and generosity, Vicki Feinmel, Director The Wonder Years Preschool Staten Island, NY”
Gentle Learning Preschool, in partnership with the Lisle Park District and the Lisle Partners for Parks Foundation, is sponsoring a fundraiser for The Wonder Years Preschool to purchase Circle Time area rugs needed in their classrooms. These rugs are at the top of Vicki’s wish list, since she purchased new rugs in August, but had to discard them due to flood water damage. The fundraiser goal is to raise enough money to replace seven 9’x12’ rugs, which are approximately $650 each. These rugs are very similar to what Gentle Learning Preschool students play and sit on every day. br>     Donations will be accepted now through January 31, 2013. Credit cards, cash or checks made payable to the Partners for Parks Foundation will be accepted. Donations can be brought to the Recreation Center front desk, 1925 Ohio Street, Lisle, Illinois 60532. Please know that donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
Gentle Learning Preschool teachers and staff hope the community will consider giving a donation to our preschool neighbors in need. They are also collecting words of encouragement, drawings or notes for the students at The Wonder Years Preschool with your donation and thank you in advance for your generosity. For questions or more information, please contact Cheryl Patterson at 630-353-4342 or cpatterson@lisleparkdistrict.org. Pictures can be view online at www.LisleParkDistrict.org (click here).

Lisle Park District's Jennifer Porrevecchio Wins IPRA Facility Manager of the Year
Lisle, IL - It was a normal meeting of the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association (IPRA), or so Jennifer Porrevecchio, CPRP, thought on Friday, November 9, 2012. Surrounded by her coworkers and nominator, Superintendent of Recreation Michael Toohey, CPRP, Jennifer had no idea she was about to receive the IPRA Facility Manager of the Year Award for her dedication to Sea Lion Aquatic Park and Community Park Fitness.
Jennifer is the facility manager of Lisle Park District’s award winning Sea Lion Aquatic Park in addition to managing Community Park Fitness Center. She has been with the Lisle Park District for over eleven years; she rose in the ranks as a lifeguard, head guard, and then as manager of the aquatic park. Since joining the district full time in 2006, Jennifer has turned both into profitable facilities in a few years. When Jennifer began, Sea Lion Aquatic Park operated at a $73,000 deficit. In 2009, the facility was netting a profit of $39,800, a 154% increase. Since 2009, she has maintained that growth as well as increased enrollment in swim team and swim lessons. Jennifer’s focus on the safety and well-being of her patrons, with a bigger emphasis on lifeguard training, resulted in increased audit scores through Ellis & Associates. These unannounced audits have consistently changed from “Meets” to “Exceeds” across the board.
Jennifer also oversees Community Park Fitness (CPF) where similar successes have been reported. She turned the Fitness Center into a profit center for the Lisle Park District in only two years. In 2008, CPF went from operating at a deficit of $28,000 to a profit of $29,000 in 2010, a 203% increase. Under Jennifer’s influence, the fitness memberships saw a 25% increase to over 500 members. She also led the charge for more space for health and wellness programs with the addition of two new fitness/dance studios that opened this past spring. These new rooms have boosted programming enrollment and created more locations for personal training sessions. Personal Training, which she introduced in 2008, has increased every year since it started.
Jennifer’s hard work and dedication can be seen in the community as well as at the statewide level. She currently serves on the Village of Lisle Coalition, alongside the School District, Library District, and Police and Fire Departments, whose goal is to increase awareness and reinforce the positive choices of teens. In addition, the Coalition strives to increase awareness of the current substance abuse issues with at-risk youth. Jennifer also represents the IPRA Recreation & Facility sections by serving as the co-curriculum chair for Supervisor Symposium.
No doubt that Jennifer’s involvement in the District, greater Lisle Community, and Illinois Parks and Recreation Association made her the ideal recipient of the IPRA Facility Manager of the Year Award. As Jennifer took the stage to receive the award, she thanked her coworkers saying, “I am fortunate to work with an amazingly supportive staff. I love my colleagues and working at the Lisle Park District takes the cake!”

Lisle Park District Resident Wins $20,000 Grant for Arbor View Park’s Baseball Field in Chevrolet’s Diamonds & Dreams Program
Lisle, IL – Lisle Park District resident Jack O’Connell was at home watching the Chicago Cubs play this summer and saw a commercial for the Chevrolet’s Diamonds and Dreams program. He entered the contest online and nominated the Lisle Park District as his home community for a ball field renovation. A few weeks later Mr. O’Connell received the good news that his submission resulted in the Lisle Park District receiving a refurbished youth ball field, designed and renovated by Ripken Design and FIELDS, Inc.
Lisle was one of 12 communities selected to receive a refurbished playing field as part of Chevrolet’s Diamonds and Dreams program. One winner is chosen each week through July 22. In its third year, Diamonds & Dreams has awarded more than 25 youth field makeovers across the country. A representative from the Diamonds and Dreams program reviewed multiple Lisle Park District fields and selected Arbor View Park, a neighborhood park with an older ball field as the best candidate.
“The timing couldn’t be more perfect. We were budgeting to renovate the Arbor View ball field in the 2013 Capital Budget,” said Dan Garvy, Director of Parks and Recreation. “Jack’s gesture and success winning the Diamonds and Dreams program absolutely saved the Lisle Park District and the taxpayers $20,000. We are budgeting to have the backstop replaced in 2013, hopefully before the spring season begins. We would like to have an all-new field, inside and outside the lines.”
To celebrate the newly renovated field, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, carnival, giveaways and baseball clinic on Saturday, October 13 from 10am to 12noon. A schedule of activities is as follows: 10:00am Complimentary refreshments and giveaways; 11:00am Grant explanation, Project Recap and Ribbon Cutting; 11:15am Carnival and Clinic hosted by Lisle Baseball–Softball and the DuPage Hounds. The baseball clinic will be given by coaches and volunteers and is open to both adults and children, just bring a glove and bat. This event is being sponsored by Lisle Park District, Lisle Baseball-Softball, Chevrolet, Bill Kay Chevrolet, Lisle Baseball-Softball and Scotts. “Spread the word, bring your baseball glove and get ready for a day of October Baseball in Lisle,” said Dan Garvy, Director of Parks and Recreation.
Renovations of the field makeover were administered through Ripken Design, a division of Ripken Baseball, owned and operated by National Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. and 12-year Major League Baseball veteran Bill Ripken. “I have been working with Chevy for about two decades and it is a relationship I value a great deal,” said Cal Ripken. Together we are positively impacting kids through baseball at the grassroots level and giving them safe places to play. It is a very gratifying part of what we do, and I appreciate Chevrolet making us a part of this terrific effort.”
The Official Lawn Care Company of Major League Baseball™, Scotts, will continue to partner with Chevrolet and lend its support to multiple field refurbishments. “Scotts believes that it is important to offer youths a safe, reliable field and playing area. In addition to helping reduce injuries, a strong foundation of thick and lush grass helps to create a beautiful outdoor environment that encourage children to spend time outdoors,” said Chris Strunk, Scotts manager, sports marketing and sponsorship.
As the Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball™, Chevrolet also supports the Chevrolet Youth Baseball (CYB) program, which has helped raise more than $13 million to aid local teams during the past seven years. More than 3 million young people in communities across the country have benefitted. More than 1,600 Chevrolet dealers are participating this year. For more information about Chevrolet’s support of baseball, the Diamonds & Dreams program and a chance to win, please visit www.chevybaseball.com.

The Lisle Park District Adds Site to List of Park Properties
Lisle, IL – In response to its 2006 Master Plan, recent community surveys and ongoing feedback from park district residents, the Lisle Park District purchased a four acre parcel at 4S281 Leask Lane in the northwest corner of the district. The property, formerly owned by the Bruce A. Germain Trust, sold for $525,000. “We are very excited about this acquisition. Knowing what this property was originally listed for as well as what other property owners in the area are asking for similarly sized parcels, $525,000 for this beautiful site is a great price and we couldn’t be more pleased.” said Don Cook, Park Board President.
The District’s immediate plans for the site include: removing some of the overgrown vegetation, the eventual removal of the house, placement of picnic tables and the installation of appropriate site signage. Once the property is suitable for public use they will consider plans for park development. However, due to budget constraints the District doesn’t expect to enter that phase for at least a year or more. “The pursuit of acquiring property in this area has been a priority for years, and the current economic climate afforded us the opportunity to move forward. While complete site development might not occur for a few years, the opportunity to acquire property now was one that couldn’t be passed up.” said Director of Parks and Recreation Dan Garvy.
Eventually, the park district will engage neighbors of the park to determine development plans. “Since our goal for this site is to provide recreational opportunities to the currently under-served section of our district, we will solicit feedback from those closest to the site including the residents of Pine Hill, Exeter, Canterbury, Corporate Woods, Hunt Club of Corporate Woods and other Park District residents along Leask Lane,” said Garvy. “At this point we envision a playground, picnic shelter, a small parking lot, walking trails and plenty of open space.”
The Lisle Park District provides a variety of leisure activities for people of all ages throughout the year. Park district facilities include Lisle Community Park; the Recreation Center which houses Gentle Learning Preschool, Senior Center and multipurpose rooms; Sea Lion Aquatic Park; River Bend Golf Course; Wheatstack – A Midwestern Eatery & Tap and numerous neighborhood playgrounds and parks offering amenities such as tennis courts, ball fields, walking paths and picnic areas totaling close to 400 acres. Enjoy history, a firing cannon and a Civil War luncheon at Depot Days 2012
Lisle, IL – Join us on Saturday, September 15, and Sunday, September 16 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., to experience a noisy remembrance of the Civil War while enjoying a Civil War luncheon and stepping back into the history of Lisle and DuPage County www.LisleHeritageSociety.org.
Beginning at noon and hourly each day until 4 p.m., a group of Civil War re-enactors will fire a Civil War canon as part of the 28th Annual Depot Days celebration at The Museums at Lisle Station Park, 921 School St., Lisle. Admission is free. In between firings, the group, dressed in Civil War uniforms, will be on hand to explain how the canon fires, talk Civil War history and lead visitors through several displays including a Civil War encampment, in which members of the group will spend Saturday night.
The group represents Taylor's Battery, a Chicago Light Artillery unit organized early in the Civil War by Ezra Taylor. Approximately 207 members from the greater Chicago region fought under Generals William T. Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant and were recognized as one of the finest light artillery units in the Army. The battery's six guns were heard at most of the great battles of the West, including Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga and Atlanta.
From Noon to 2 p.m. each day, a special Civil War luncheon will be served under a tent in the commons featuring three favorite dishes of different Civil War Generals. Prepared by Wheatstack - A Midwestern Eatery & Tap as facility of the Lisle Park District, the luncheon will feature General Hill’s bean soup, General Butterfield’s shepherd pie and General Butler’s bread pudding. Cost of the luncheon is $7 per person.
According to Civil War Period Cookery by Robert W. Pelton, the three generals had quite different personalities. Daniel Harvey Hill was a Major General for the Confederacy who was in charge of defending Richmond during the battle of Gettysburg. Daniel Butterfield was a Union Brigadier General who won the Medal of Honor for courage under fire. Union Major General Benjamin Franklin Butler was the Governor of New Orleans, but he was removed from this position and eventually removed from his command because of his dictatorial and corrupt ways.

Seniors Sink Hole in One on the Same Hole, Hours Apart
Lisle, IL – River Bend Golf Club was buzzing with excitement on the morning of Tuesday, May 15, with the news that Robert Van Iderstine, a regular, aced hole five, a par three. At six-thirty in the morning, before many of us had started the day, Van Iderstine was teeing off as a substitute in a Senior League foursome. “It was an early sunny morning and we were the first on the course. There was some glare, so I took out my five iron and lofted the ball. I knew it was online, but didn’t see where the ball landed.” After the other members of the foursome took their shots, they approached the hole thinking Van Iderstine had flied the green until someone said, “Bob, you’d better go get your ball out of the hole.” Van Iderstine retells the exhilaration that followed: “Everything went crazy. I was more shocked than excited and it took a while for me to accept it, but from there it was fantastic. It was my first ace, but hopefully not my last.” The rest of the game was a blur, but Bob returned to the pro shop ready to celebrate with his foursome. However, at that early hour the bar at Wheatstack, the restaurant on the property, had not yet opened so he bought everyone a celebratory round of coffee. The excitement was palpable as the pro shop staff promptly added Van Iderstine’s name to the Hole in One Club and returned to their daily tasks.
Just a few hours later, Frank Jenkover began a weekly game with his Senior League foursome. He admitted the day began was off to a great start by shooting only a five on the first hole instead of going into the water, like usual. Jenkover continued to par each hole and then approached hole five, the same hole that everyone was talking about. He pulled out a seven-iron and teed up his logoed River Bend golf ball. One of the members of the foursome watched the ball roll towards the pin, but lost track of it. Jenklover assumed that since the ball was not visible on the green, it must have rolled off the back of the green. This is what happened a few years ago when he prematurely celebrated a hole in one. The foursome approached the hole with trepidation, but there sat the River Bend Golf Club logo looking up at them. Jenkover finally had his hole in one, and by this time of day, the group was able to celebrate at Wheatstack.
Incredibly, two aces were scored on the same day, on the same hole. When asked, neither gentleman had thought to purchase a lottery ticket, but clearly the odds were in their favor. According to the US Golf Insurance Agency, the odds of an average golfer scoring a hole in one are 12,500 to 1. The odds of two golfers scoring a hole in one on the same hole is unbelievably rare, roughly 32,000 to 1. River Bend happily lists winners to the Hole in One Club in the pro shop and on their virtual wall of fame online.
It is the Mission of River Bend Golf Club to incorporate the course’s natural resources in a premier, 9-hole playing experience accommodating all skill levels in a fun, friendly and affordable environment.     Lisle, IL – The Lisle Park District received the esteemed “Earth Flag” and a resolution of commendation from the DuPage County Board on Thursday, April 29, 2012 at the meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners. Kay McKeen, Founder and Executive Director of School & Community Assistance for Recycling & Composting Education (SCARCE) presented the Earth Flag, symbolic of reducing environmental impact, green responsibility and leadership to the Lisle Park District. Together with SCARCE, a resolution was presented by DuPage County Board Member Michael Ledonne which commended the Park District for approving an environmental policy, completing training to enhance green efforts, expanding the recycling program, planting native vegetation and using organic fertilizers, to name a few of the eco-friendly actions cited.
Becoming a green leader in Lisle and the greater Lisle community has been an initiative of the Lisle Park District and became a significant focus for Michael Toohey, Superintendent of Recreation, when he was hired in 2008. At that time, Toohey proposed the Park District begin working with SCARCE towards the Earth Flag certification. Inspired by his enthusiasm, a green committee was formed and the crayon and shoe recycling programs along with a number of other green initiatives were a result. Toohey also initiated the Abitibi Paper Retriever recycling program and has recycled over 83.747 tons of paper saving over 1,424 trees. When the Lisle Park District Board of Park Commissioners passed the Environmental Policy to “establish standards to promote sound environmental practices” the District was well on the way towards achieving Earth Flag certification.
During the summer of 2011, the Park District took strides in renovating the existing building at 1925 Ohio Street which is now the new Recreation Center. The construction utilized environmentally-friendly resources and repurposed existing building materials. After the Recreation Center opened, SCARCE performed an “environmental audit" of the facility and existing positive sustainability initiatives (CFL lights bulbs, automatic lights, rain barrels, on-site recycling) and areas for improvement (change font to Century Gothic which reportedly uses 30% less ink than Arial, switch to all green cleaning products). Following the audit, the Park District completed the SCARCE Sustainability Assessment outlining environmental efforts made since 2008, resulting in Thursday’s Earth Flag certification.
Lisle Park District and Lisle Baseball Softball League, Inc. Partner to Keep Fields Safe and Looking Great
Lisle, IL – Although the season is only six months of the year, the Lisle Park District plans and prepares for baseball and softball season year-round. Along with input from the Lisle Baseball Softball League, Inc., the focus for renovations is both better playing conditions and improving safety for participants and spectators. This year’s improvements will not only create a safer environment, but also provide Lisle some of the best-looking ball fields in the area. Together with the Lisle Baseball Softball League, Inc., the Lisle Park District has made dozens of upgrades throughout the twenty ball fields in within the Lisle Park District service area.
“Our goal, along with Lisle Baseball-Softball league is to provide quality athletic programming for our residents, both young and old alike. The improvements made to the fields in the off season will help us make great strides in achieving this goal.” Erica Wise, Lisle Park District Athletic & Youth Camp Manager and Lisle Slammers Travel Softball 13U Head Coach.
New infields were graded at Arbor View Park, Community Park fields one, two, five, and six, Kennedy Jr. High, Scheisher School, Surrey Ridge Athletic Complex field two and three, Tate Woods Park, and Todd Riley field at Beau Bien Park. The new dirt and infield grading improves the playability by creating a smoother surface which assists in drainage. Fewer games are cancelled due to muddy fields or puddles after heavy rains. At Community Park fields one, two, and five, dugout fencing was extended to help prevent foul balls from striking players seated in the dugouts. In addition, the entire baseball diamond at Tate Woods Park was moved 25 feet southwest to reduce the impact of trees around the perimeter of the field and improve safety for pedestrians using the walking path behind the backstop.
Throughout 2011 and 2012, new fencing has been a significant focus in order to provide safer games for both players and spectators outside the field of play. Surrey Ridge Athletic Complex fields one through three, Tate Woods Park and Todd Riley Field all received new fencing that is a heavier grade, is higher to improve player and spectator safety, and is much more visually appealing. The fencing at Community Park field one was replaced to reduce the occurrence of dangerous and unpredictable bounces that could injure players. Also, field six at Community Park received much-needed safety upgrades including new fences around the perimeter, raised fences in front of the dugouts to improve player safety and enlarged dugouts to provide a safer on-deck area.
"Lisle Baseball Softball League is committed to providing the boys and girls of Lisle and neighboring communities with the best possible playing conditions. We are proud of the ball fields in Lisle and appreciate the opportunity to work with the Lisle Park District in keeping the softball and baseball diamonds in great condition." Randy LaBelle, President of Lisle Baseball Softball League, Inc. More information about Lisle Baseball Softball League, Inc. is available at www.lislebaseballsoftball.org. On behalf of the Lisle Baseball Softball League, Inc., the Lisle Park District is collecting gently used baseball/softball equipment for “Pitch in for Baseball.” The equipment collected is distributed throughout underprivileged communities “from Philly to the Philippines.” Donations may be brought to the Recreation Center, 1925 Ohio Street, Lisle, IL 60432.

This 40,000 square foot facility includes just over 20,000 square feet of newly renovated space, including several multipurpose rooms, conference rooms, with secured access to six preschool classrooms, a gross motor room, and preschool library with an outdoor play area planned for the spring of 2012.

The existing Community Center at 1825 Short Street will continue to house the park district’s Community Park Fitness center, but will also become home to fitness and wellness classes and other community multipurpose space. This transition is scheduled to occur throughout the fall upon completion of minor interior renovations. The Meadows Center, the former location of the preschool and senior programming, will continue to house many programs through the autumn months and will fully transition to the Community Center by the end of the year. The park district will continue to maintain the grounds around the Meadows building, including the playground, baseball fields and open space indefinitely and it will remain available for our programming and for public use.

Wheatstack and West Suburban Community Pantry’s "Cart From the Heart"
Lisle, IL – During the month of August, Wheatstack - A Midwestern Eatery & Tap of Lisle partnered with West Suburban Community Pantry of Woodridge to raise public awareness with the “Cart From the Heart.” Jim Renn, member of the West Suburban Community Pantry Board of Directors and Lisle Savings Bank, saw an opportunity in Wheatstack’s popular courtesy cart service. On busy nights at Wheatstack, such as Movie Mondays, Friday Night Fish Frys, and Comedy Night, volunteers from West Suburban Community Pantry assumed the duties of Wheatstack’s courtesy cart driver, shuttling patrons to and from their cars and the restaurant entrance. While on the short ride the “Cart from the Heart” created awareness of the 1,300 low income students in school districts 68 and 202 that benefit through donations to the pantry, and the 3,000 people in DuPage County that come to the pantry monthly. Nearly $300 in donations were generously donated over the nine evenings volunteers drove the “Cart From the Heart.” “We look forward to teaming up with West Suburban Community Pantry again and hope the community is more aware of the many opportunities to support the pantry,” said Todd Shamberg, General Manager at Wheatstack.

World War II Poster Exhibit at The Museums at Lisle Station Park Historic Train Depot
Lisle, IL – An exhibit featuring U.S. government posters from World War II opens Saturday, September 3 at The Museums at Lisle Station Park located at 921 School Street in Lisle. The exhibit features seven original posters printed by the United States government, which was actively involved in propaganda efforts to encourage citizens to support the war in Europe and Asia. Posters played a vital role in this effort.

The ubiquitous "I Want You for the U.S. Army," featuring a finger-pointing Uncle Sam, is the most recognizable image in the exhibit. Another recruitment poster features Uncle Sam again, this time rolling up his sleeves and urging young men to "Defend Your Country." Famous boxer Joe Louis is shown in a combat uniform saying, "We're going to do our part...and we'll win because we're on God's side." One poster features Abraham Lincoln and an African-American pastor protecting children of all races from the evil lashes of the Axis Powers, with Lincoln's quote "This world cannot exist half slave and half free."

The exhibit was put together by the Public Affairs staff of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, and the original posters are in the library's collection. It was displayed in the Governor's Tent at the 1995 Illinois State Fair as part of an exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. It is now one of several traveling exhibits available from the Illinois Association of Museums. The exhibit will be on display at the Museums of Lisle Station Park through Saturday, October 15, 2011. Admission to the museum is free and hours of operation are Tuesday and Thursday from 1-4pm and Saturdays from 10am-4pm through Labor Day. Starting September 6, hours change to Saturdays from 1-4pm. Lisle Park District Awards Seniors Robert Kuzmicki Education Scholarships

Lisle, IL – On Thursday, July 21, at the regular monthly board meeting of the Lisle Park District Board of Park Commissioners, two Lisle Seniors were awarded the Robert Kuzmicki Education Scholarship. The scholarship was created in memory of Bob Kuzmicki, who lost his battle with a rare form of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December of 2005. Bob, a devoted father and husband was also the Lisle Park District’s facility specialist and was well known by many patrons at Sea Lion Aquatic Park for his dedication to the facility. The Lisle Park District received many qualified applications for the two $500 scholarships. Applicants were asked to explain the importance of community involvement and how it applies to their lives, the benefits of the park district, and how their work ethic will affect their future goals. The two students chosen by the scholarship committee have astonishing work ethics, are incredibly selfless, and truly understand the role a park district plays within the community.

TThe first of two scholarships was awarded to Tijana Popovic. Tijana graduated from Lisle Senior High School this year with a grade point average of 5.25. She has been accepted and plans to attend the University of Illinois where she hopes to pursue a degree in pre-med psychology. Tijana’s academic and extra-curricular accomplishments truly exemplify an outstanding work ethic. She served as president of the National Honors Society, was a member of Varsity Choir, Key Club, Student Congress, Student Ambassador, Yellow Ribbon Committee, Math team, and participated in many musicals and plays. Within the Lisle Park District community, Tijana has worked as a lifeguard and swim lesson instructor at Sea Lion Aquatic Park, volunteered at the Partners for Parks Scarecrow Scramble and the Fourth of July parade. Tijana’s goal is to one day become a doctor, specializing in either Endocrinology or Pediatrics in order to help diagnose and treat patients. No doubt, with her strong work ethic Tijana will achieve her goal and go on to help many others.

Timothy J. Saul Jr. was awarded the second Robert Kuzmicki Education Scholarship. Tim, graduated from Lisle Senior High School this spring. He will study Criminal Justice at the College of Dupage and plans to transfer to Western Illinois University. Tim’s math teacher and varsity football coach, Ronald Jaegle, says “Tim has a great work ethic on the football field; he is a kind individual; he’s always there to offer assistance to a peer struggling in the classroom or to help a teammate through a challenging drill.” In school, Tim has participated in both football and basketball. He was also honored by Governor Pat Quinn for volunteering in the “Kids Can’t Buy ‘Em Here” tobacco enforcement program. Within the Lisle Park District community, Tim has volunteered for the past two years as a head coach for the travel basketball program, been the scorekeeper for the in-house basketball league, umpired practice games for Lisle baseball and worked at the concessions at Sea Lion Aquatic Park. Tim’s active involvement in the Lisle community has led him toward the field of law enforcement. He wishes to keep citizens and their property safe. Tim says that nothing will stop him from perusing his dreams of becoming a police officer. His desire to help and encourage others and Tim’s caring concern for the community will continue to define him as a leader for years to come.

The Lisle Park District, the Board of Park Commissioners, and Partners for Parks, wish both Tijana and Tim the best in their endeavors. The application for next year’s Robert Kuzmicki Education Scholarship is available online by visiting www.LisleParkDistrict.org/scholarship.

Baseball Field at Beau Bien Park Dedicated to Todd Riley

Lisle, IL – On April 23, nearly 200 friends, family and neighbors gathered on a beautiful sunny afternoon to attend the dedication of the Beau Bien Park baseball field to the memory of Todd Riley. Todd was a little league coach for six years and served as a board member for Lisle Baseball Softball League for three years. He dedicated his time volunteering and contributing throughout Lisle and focused on the Beau Bien neighborhood. In his short 44 years, he became a cornerstone of the community and was a wonderful husband, father and citizen.

The Lisle Park District’s Board of Park Commissioners Margaret Hough, Tony Carballo, President Don Cook and Director of Parks and Recreation Dan Garvy attended the dedication. “I am amazed and humbled by this event, and so grateful to have been part of this special day,” said Cook. The park district was approached last year to dedicate the neighborhood field to Riley. With an overwhelming 120 signatures on the petition, the Board of Park Commissioners voted to offer the field at Beau Bien as a memorial. With the support of the Lisle Park District, the Lisle Baseball Softball League organized the dedication ceremony exactly one year after Todd’s battle with cancer ended.

A rainy week gave way to a breezy spring day as Todd’s wife, Alicia, and sons, Ryan and Kyle, listened closely as friends spoke of Todd’s dedication as a father, a Lisle baseball coach and volunteer. The crowd blew bubbles from small vials and waited for the newly installed sign to be revealed. As Todd’s two boys pulled the cover aside, a swell in the wind carried the cloud of bubbles toward the sign and surrounded the Rileys. While the air filled with bubbles John Fogerty’s “Center Field” began playing. There wasn’t a dry eye in attendance and appropriately, a pickup game of baseball followed the ceremony. Those in attendance joined in christening the newly dedicated field and Todd’s sons each threw out the first pitch.

Lisle Park District Participated in Paper Retriever’s Nationwide Paper Drive

Lisle, Illinois – The Lisle Park District recycled 2.71 tons of paper during the month of March in celebration of Earth Day. “We recycled 25 tons of paper total in 2010, and we are off to a great start in 2011!” said Michael Toohey, Superintendent of Recreation. “We encourage everyone in our community to bring newspapers, magazines, catalogs, old mail, office and school papers to our green and yellow bins located the Community Center parking lot.” This paper drive is aimed at encouraging community members to be good stewards of the environment while also supporting local non-profits by recycling through Paper Retriever bins. Organizations that host Paper Retriever bins will receive an “Earth Day Bonus” based on the amount of paper recycled through their bins during the month of March.

The proceeds from the paper drive at Lisle Park District go to offering more recycling efforts around the park district including recycling bins throughout the parks. The recycling effort is organized by the Lisle Park District’s in-house environmental committee. In addition, the Lisle Park District is a Green by Choice Sustainable Lisle Business.

“Earth Day is a time for us to focus on the small things each of us can do to better our planet,” said Sylvain Longval, Vice President of Recycling with Paper Retriever. “Paper Retriever gives people in the community an opportunity to do that and more. By simply recycling our paper, we can help non-profit organizations earn money while making a good environmental change as well.”

Spring into Fitness with Lisle Park District’s Outdoor Fitness Equipment

Spring weather has finally arrived and the Lisle Park District invites you to get moving on the ExerSkys outdoor fitness equipment. Installed at Community Park and Surrey Ridge Athletic Complex, ExerSkys units are designed to meet the needs of active adults, from teens age 14 and up to seniors. This specialized outdoor exercise equipment offers low resistance “fitness terraining” for people of all ability levels in the natural beauty of the outdoors. Placed along walking paths, ExerSkys help supplement a fitness routine. Users take a break from walking or running, perform a few repetitions at a station, then continue on the pathway. As part of a pilot program, the equipment was donated by Partners for Parks through the Hazel VanKampen Memorial Fund. There are three ExerSkys stations from the Ranger Series which aim to increase range of motion and three stations from the Easy Terrainer Series which focus on building strength and flexibility.

In Community Park, along the south walking path behind Sea Lion Aquatic Park, are an elliptical trainer, shoulder wheel, and waist twister, all from the Easy Terrainer Series. On the north, south and west sides of the walking path surrounding Surrey Ridge Athletic Complex (located at the intersection of Naper Blvd. and Abbeywood Dr.) are the Ranger Series parallel bars, elliptical terrainer, and chest press. These easy-to-use stations are complete with instructions for use and are great for all ranges of ability by utilizing an individual’s body weight as resistance. For more information regarding the Lisle Park District’s ExerSkys Equipment, call 630-964-3410 or visit LisleParkDistrict.org/Parks to view equipment and instructions.

Lisle Park District Presented with Bus for Senior Programs
On March 24, 2011 Navistar announced its plans to partner with the Lisle Park District in providing a new bus for senior trip programs. The bus was presented by Jeff Bowen, vice president, Special Projects, Navistar and David Hillman, director, Global Bus Marketing, IC Bus, to Don Cook, Lisle Park District Board president, and Board of Park Commissioners Tony Carballo, Margaret Hough and Debra Morse. Also in attendance was Mayor of Lisle Joe Broda, and Village Trustees Mark Boyle, Ed Young, Cathy Cawiezel, Joe Schmitt, Lee LaFond and Clerk Tim Seeden. Representing the Lisle Park District was Dan Garvy, Director of Parks and Recreation, Superintendent of Parks Aaron Cerutti, Superintendent of Operations Lisa Leone, Superintendent of Finance Scott Silver, Superintendent of Recreation Mike Toohey and the Departments of Recreation and Facilities, Operations, River Bend Golf Club, Parks and Facilities Maintenance, Business and Customer Relations. Many residents participating in the senior trip scheduled for that day attended the presentation ceremony and were delighted to preview the new bus.

Present for the event was Doris Grillo, a decade-long Lisle resident and frequent senior trip attendee. “I am excited that the new bus is bigger and that the ride will be smoother. The overhead bins will be wonderful for our ‘resaling trips’ and with additional seating I hope less people will have to be put on a waiting list. This bus is a great benefit to the senior trip programs and we appreciate Navistar partnering with the Lisle Park District.”

A Lisle resident since 1975, Evelyn Horejsi also attended the bus presentation. “As a retiree, I work my schedule around the Lisle Park District’s senior trips – this month I am going on eight different outings. This bus is a dream come true! We will have more functional space with room for packages and we won’t have to store items on our laps. I am very proud of the senior programming at the park district and looking forward to the exciting trips on our new bus.”

Navistar sees this unique public-private partnership as an opportunity to provide a transportation solution to the park district while helping meet the needs of their constituents. The bus being presented to the park district is an IC Bus HC Series Platinum, which seats 31 passengers and has air conditioning and an audio and video system.

Lisle Park District Playground Donated to Children of Haiti
Last April, the playground at Valley Forge Park in Lisle was scheduled for replacement. The vendor that won the bid to replace the playground suggested the Lisle Park District contact Kids Around the World, a nonprofit organization that “builds playgrounds and hope for the children of the world.” Kids Around the World works with municipalities that are replacing or removing playgrounds by helping disassemble older playgrounds and then refurbish, repair and repaint as necessary. Then the playgrounds are inspected for safety and installed in communities around the world “devastated by war, natural disaster and economic stress.” The Lisle Park District Board of Commissioners and staff agreed to recycle the old playground and give it to such a positive and green cause. The Lisle Park District maintenance employees went to work carefully disassembling the old playground and volunteers from Kids Around the World took the pieces to their Rockford facility to be refurbished, inventoried, crated and stored while waiting to be shipped to a community in need.

KKids Around the World determined that the playground was most needed in a tent village in Haiti called “Vilage Mirak," or Miracle Village, located outside of Fond Parisien which is about 20 miles east of Port-au-Prince. In its master plan, Miracle Village will build 500 homes, with public buildings, roads and a market. The Kids Around the World volunteers broke ground for the former Lisle Park District playground on January 12, 2011, one year after the devastating earthquake that destroyed Haiti. After five days of digging in the rocky soil, pouring cement, reassembling framework, setting up slides and ladders, and passing inspection by the certified playground safety inspectors, the playground was complete. On January 16, 2011 the volunteers decorated the newly built playground with balloons and held a dedication ceremony in the village. As the ribbon was cut, the children rushed to the playground with smiles and laughter. Kids Around the World is looking for volunteers and partners that may know of any playgrounds available for recycling. Please visit: www.KidsAroundTheWorld.com for more information.
